Who is better as a model of intersectionality than Rihanna? We thought so too. In this workshop, we discussed the concept of intersectionality and what it means in different contexts. Sometimes this can seem a bit intimidating and is often used as a buzzword. We boiled it down with the help of a Ted Talk from Kimberlé Crenshaw– an intersectional civil rights advocate who originally coined the term. She says that intersectionality is the presence of overlapping identities that create a “specific type of systematic oppression and discrimination” experienced by a person. During this workshop we shared our different identities and how they contributed to our understanding of our experiences in life and at UW.
