Leadership practice:
My leadership practice is organizing Greek Week. This is an annual week-long function that works in collaboration with the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association of University of Washington during the latter part of spring quarter. Within Greek Week, there are a number of events that are hosted by these groups tailored to members of the Greek Community, ranging from competitions on Denny field, to the second annual Red Bull Chariot Races, to a movie night out on the Quad. I am also working together with other organizations such as Arts and Entertainment, Rainy Dawg Radio, and the Student Health Consortium to connect Greeks to the rest of the university. This is only scratching the surface with the number of events that take place during the week, but every single one is important in building up spirit within our community and providing the opportunity for a good, wholesome time!
I am the Vice President of Greek Relations for the Interfraternity Council, and Greek Week is a part of my job description. I became involved with IFC during my freshman year by joining the Greek Week committee, headed by my predecessor. Because of the great time I had organizing events on the committee, I applied the following year for the VP position. Through being elected by the presidents of the Greek Community, I then became the Greek Relations officer, in charge of a multitude of events in the community, with a major part being Greek Week.
Now, organizing this kind of a function that has had as many as 1,500 people attend any given event is a major thrill for me. I also formed the first ever Greek Relations and Programming Committee for this and all of the other events that happen in the community. This committee is formed out of 11 people and has been a major help in organizing the week. Keeping the committee functioning is a very difficult task, but if the effort is put in, it can be incredibly successful and help events become larger than they were before.
So, overall the main takeaway is that I have found a passion for creating these kinds of events. It takes a lot of drive (and sleepless nights) to form something as large as this, but it has been highly rewarding to see it all come to fruition. Hopefully this year’s Greek Week is the largest it has ever been!
