Leadership practice:
For my leadership practice I was involved with TEDxUofW as a Volunteer Manager. TEDxUofW is an independently organized event that brings people together to share a TED-like experience. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, speakers and TEDTalk videos combine to spark discussion and connection among attendees. As a Volunteer Manager I worked closely with the curators to help plan out speaker selection, attendee SWAG, and event day logistics. One of my main functions was to facilitate communication and information flow between all the different committees. I was also in charge of assigning volunteer roles for the day of the event and keeping everyone in place and on task. So many of the UWL workshops/lessons contributed to my experience in this project, including communication, the interaction of leadership styles, goal-setting, and the involvement fair, which is where I first heard about TEDxUofW. My biggest takeaways include skills related to and insight into event planning and how important communication, accountability, and flexibility are when working with large groups of people.
